Choose a typing sound app for audio that follows ordinary keystrokes. Choose a soundboard when you want to trigger particular clips, especially for other people in a voice chat. Klakk plays its fourteen included keyboard packs through your chosen output. It does not send clips into a microphone stream or supply a custom soundboard.
I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. I prepared this comparison with AI assistance and checked the linked official offers on October 12, 2026. The soundboard features below are published capabilities, not our tests of every game, voice app or audio device.

Decide who should hear the sound
A PC owner asking about soundboards wanted to use clips with friends and asked whether separate software was needed or whether using Discord changed the choice. That question is about sending a chosen sound to a conversation. A mechanical keyboard recording playing in your headphones does not automatically reach that conversation.
| What you want | Start with this type of feature |
|---|---|
| Hear a mechanical sample while you type | A reactive keyboard sound app |
| Play a chosen clip to yourself | A local soundboard or audio player |
| Play a clip in a Discord voice channel | Discord’s Soundboard, subject to channel permission |
| Send clips through a recording device to other voice apps | A documented voice-chat soundboard and compatible recording device |
There are two decisions: what triggers playback, and where the audio goes. A keyboard shortcut, an audio-output dropdown and a microphone-playback feature solve different parts. Select the destination first so that you evaluate the right product.
Discord already includes a soundboard
Discord’s official Soundboard guide describes short clips that participants in the same voice channel can hear. You can use the server’s Soundboard without Nitro. Using sounds across servers requires an active Nitro subscription, and server or channel permissions can limit who may use the feature.
That is a reason to check the built-in option before buying a separate app for a Discord-only requirement. Discord also distinguishes the Play action from its speaker preview, which plays only for you. The two controls have different audiences even though they show the same sound.
If you upload your own clips, you remain responsible for their rights. An app’s purchase price does not grant permission to redistribute every recording you find. Confirm the current Nitro offer if you need its paid features.
Soundpad has a different playback destination
Leppsoft’s Soundpad is a Windows soundboard for playing audio in voice chats. Its manual documents playback to speakers, to a microphone, or to both. The speaker volume and microphone playback level are separate controls. Choosing the speakers-only mode matters if a sound is meant for you alone.
The developer’s current download is 4.0.35, dated September 16, 2026, and lists Windows 10 and 11 among its supported systems. It requires an audio recording device and administrator privileges for installation and device-preference changes. Its 32-bit and 64-bit downloads do not establish native Windows ARM64 support.
The free trial allows up to ten sounds in the list and ten sound plays per application restart. That is a usage-limited trial, rather than Klakk’s three-day trial. Evaluate the route and controls you need before buying; a free trial download does not give unlimited full-version playback.
The developer’s purchase page displays €4.99 including VAT for a full-version serial number. The current US Steam offer displays US$4.99. These are separately displayed regional offers, not a currency conversion. Confirm the edition, regional checkout and purchase conditions you select. Buying an audio tool also does not provide a right to use someone else’s sound files.
Choose the edition before paying
In a Soundpad purchase discussion rendered July 29, 2018, a buyer said they liked the program but regretted choosing Steam after noticing its visible activity and accumulated hours. They asked whether that purchase could supply a standalone serial instead. This is one historical purchase choice, with operating system and app version unstated; it does not establish today’s Steam behavior or demand volume.
The current publisher FAQ gives a specific answer: Soundpad’s Steam and standalone editions cannot be linked or switched. Their licensing and integration are separate. The website full-version offer supplies a serial that activates its trial, while the Steam edition uses its Steam integration without a serial. A similar feature list or price does not make those receipts interchangeable.
| Requirement | Purchase condition to check |
|---|---|
| Use Soundpad’s standalone serial route | The publisher’s standalone full-version offer |
| Keep the Steam edition and library integration | The Steam purchase and its client requirement |
| Hide the in-game status from others | Current visibility controls, separately from edition licensing |
The FAQ documents a Steam-first launch requirement for that edition. It also now provides Manage → Mark as Private for hiding its in-game status. Do not repeat the old visibility complaint as if that control were still absent. A visibility option is not a license converter; the companion comparison separates visibility from activity records.
Evaluate the edition you intend to keep: the publisher links a standalone trial, and the current Steam listing offers a demo. Trying before payment and obtaining a refund afterward are different conditions. A thread participant’s decision to repurchase does not promise that another purchase can be refunded or exchanged. We have not started either demo, opened Steam, transferred a license or requested a refund. This Soundpad-specific rule should not be applied to every Steam utility or to Klakk’s separate platform licenses.
Check whether clips can overlap
Decide whether you need one chosen clip, two different clips at once, or another copy of the same clip before its first playback ends. A larger sound library and unlimited full-version use do not answer those questions.
A July 2024 Soundpad request asked for overlapping playback, including repeated instances of the same sound. A January 2025 reply said the commenter discovered the limitation after buying. Those historical reports do not establish a current defect or how often buyers encounter this requirement; their application versions and computers were not specified.
| Playback requirement | Confirm before buying |
|---|---|
| Choose a different clip | A new selection can replace the current playback. |
| Hear two separate clips together | Each clip can stay active with its own playback position. |
| Trigger the same clip again over itself | A new instance can start while its earlier instance continues. |
| Play a prepared combination | Several recordings are mixed into one file before playback. |
Soundpad’s current FAQ explicitly says it does not play more than one sound at a time. Its documented alternative is to overlap sounds in an external editor and add the resulting file to Soundpad. That produces a prepared clip: it does not let you independently start, stop or rebalance its original components during playback. Paying for Soundpad’s full version removes its trial limits, rather than adding a documented live-overlap feature.
On Mac, Farrago documents a different choice. Its playback manual shows multiple active tiles, with individual stop or pause controls. In Grid mode, its Inspector has a per-tile Solo setting that stops other audio when that tile starts. Pressing an already-playing tile’s shortcut normally stops it; Pausable changes that behavior to pause and resume. Support for several tiles therefore does not by itself promise repeated overlapping instances of one tile.
The checked Farrago offer is 2.2.0 for macOS 14–27. Its single-user license costs US$55, with local tax potentially added. The trial exposes its features, then overlays noise after twenty sounds are played; quitting and relaunching resets that limitation. These are published conditions, not our playback tests. Farrago is a Mac option, not a replacement Windows download.
Overlapping local audio and sending that mix to a call are separate purchases and setup decisions. Rogue Amoeba’s voice-chat guide uses its additional Loopback software to combine Farrago and a microphone into a virtual input. The current Farrago/Loopback bundle is US$123 before applicable tax. Check that routing tool’s own system requirements and permissions before evaluating the combination; we have not tested it in your call app.
During an available evaluation, use two clips you have permission to use. Confirm whether the second interrupts the first, and what pressing the same trigger twice does. Keep the volume comfortable and test the intended destination separately. If your actual goal is ordinary mechanical feedback while typing, hear Klakk’s fourteen packs instead. Its typing playback is not a general-purpose clip library or live soundboard mixer.
A soundboard hotkey can affect the original key action
In a February 10, 2024 question, a Soundpad user assigned a sound to Space, then found that Space no longer performed its game action. That is a historical individual report; it does not establish a current bug in Soundpad or a problem in Klakk.
Soundpad’s current manual explains the relevant choice: it blocks hotkey propagation by default. Pass hotkeys allows the foreground application to receive the key as well as triggering the sound. This is a setting to consider before making ordinary typing or game keys into soundboard commands. It is not a guarantee about every game’s input handling.
Write down whether a chosen key should still type, navigate or perform its normal action. Verify that action separately from hearing the clip. If the goal is to make selected keys quiet while other typing remains audible, the selected-key buying guide covers a different control: suppressing added playback without removing normal input.
What a Klakk purchase gives you
Klakk’s website Mac 1.4.1/build 23 and Windows 1.4.1 include 14 prepared mechanical keyboard packs. Pack selection, volume, output and enable/disable controls let you choose the added typing sound. They do not provide custom clip import, a soundboard hotkey library or microphone injection.
Use the browser preview to choose a recording, then try playback in your normal applications. If what you want is a funny phrase or a particular song clip sent to a voice channel, buying a Klakk platform license will not add that capability. For building a custom typing pack, compare the separately documented importer and editor choices instead.
Mac supports macOS 14+ on Apple silicon and Intel. Windows supports Windows 10/11 with native x64 and ARM64 builds; its installer is unsigned. Each website trial begins at first launch and lasts three days, with all fourteen packs available. Continued use is US$4.49 once per platform, plus applicable tax. Website Mac, Windows and Mac App Store licenses are separate.
Both website editions process input events locally without uploading typed text or raw key events. Usage analytics and licensing communication occurs; the Mac edition also has settings analytics and needs Input Monitoring. Read the Mac or Windows privacy description for the edition you choose.
Check the audience and controls during evaluation
For a personal typing-sound purchase, choose the intended output and type ordinary non-sensitive text. Listen to a pack you would actually keep using. Headphones route your added playback, while physical key noise can still reach a nearby microphone.
For a soundboard purchase, first use its local preview with a sound you own or may use. Check the selected playback destination and the key’s normal action before relying on that setup in a conversation. Soundboard controls may deliberately send audio even when you are wearing headphones; microphone mute alone should not be treated as a universal stop for injected clips.
If your purpose is a recording rather than a voice chat, OBS audio sources and tracks decide what enters the saved file. For a call that should stay quiet, the meeting-audio guide distinguishes microphone pickup from shared computer audio. Paying for more sounds does not settle any of those routing decisions.
Frequently asked questions
Does Klakk send typing sounds directly into Discord or a microphone?
No. It plays keyboard samples through its selected audio output. It does not provide a microphone-injection or soundboard integration feature; separate capture or routing can change what another application receives.
Do I need Nitro to use Discord’s Soundboard?
Discord says Soundboard can be used within its own server without Nitro, subject to the server or channel’s permissions. Using sounds across servers requires an active Nitro subscription.
Is Soundpad’s trial a three-day unlimited trial?
No. Its current download page limits the trial to ten sounds in the list and ten sound plays per application restart. Klakk’s website editions instead use a three-day trial from first launch.
Can a soundboard shortcut prevent a key from reaching another app?
Yes. Soundpad documents blocking hotkey propagation by default and a Pass hotkeys option to allow it. Confirm the normal key action in your own application as well as the sound.
