Illustrated keyboard switches for an OBS audio recording guide
Quick answer

Save keyboard app audio and your microphone on separate OBS tracks, keep a mixed playback track, and check the difference between recording and live audio.

Keyboard Sound App for Windows — Klakk

Play mechanical keyboard sounds as you type in Windows apps. 14 sound packs, native ARM64 and x64 support, and a 3-day free trial.

To adjust keyboard app sounds after recording, capture the app as its own OBS source and save it on a separate audio track. Keep another track containing the full mix for ordinary playback. Separating tracks cannot undo keyboard sounds already mixed into your microphone recording.

I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer, and used AI to help prepare this guide. The OBS steps follow its current official documentation, checked on October 11, 2026. Klakk’s settings refer to the website Windows version 1.4.1. This is a configuration guide, not a claim that we tested every OBS version, capture method or recording setup.

If you are choosing what to buy, compare live keyboard feedback, captured app audio and effects added in a recording editor. Wanting sound in the finished video does not always mean wanting to hear it during the take.

Start with separate sources

If one Desktop Audio source contains keyboard sounds, game audio and notifications, assigning it to three tracks creates three copies of that mixture. It does not separate the applications.

On Windows, OBS documents Application Audio Capture from OBS 28 onward for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. Select the keyboard app when it is available as a capture target, and name the source “Keyboard app.” Keep your microphone as its own source. With individual app capture, OBS advises disabling global Desktop Audio to avoid duplicate audio. See the official application capture guide.

Confirm that the keyboard source’s meter moves while typing before assigning tracks. Track checkboxes cannot fix a missing capture. Some apps are incompatible with application capture. OBS describes virtual cable alternatives that require extra software and routing; they are not a Klakk feature or a required first step.

On a Mac, the equivalent source differs. OBS 30 and later on macOS 13 or later provides macOS Audio Capture, with desktop or individual application capture. Klakk’s website Mac version separately requires macOS 14 or later. Use the OBS Mac capture instructions for the source, then apply the track plan below once that source receives audio.

The headphones and recording guide explains the earlier choice between hearing sounds yourself and including them in a recording.

Use one mixed track and two editing tracks

For a recording containing only a keyboard app and your microphone, this is a useful starting plan:

OBS sourceAssigned recording tracks
Keyboard app1 (mix), 2 (keyboard)
Microphone1 (mix), 3 (microphone)

Track 1 is for playback with both sources. Tracks 2 and 3 give an editor separate controls. The numbers are choices for this example, not channels created by Klakk.

Open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer or the Edit menu and apply those source assignments. Then enable tracks 1, 2 and 3 in Settings → Output for recording. A source assignment and an enabled recording track are both necessary. OBS’s multiple track guide explains this arrangement and why ordinary players usually play only one track at a time.

Use Advanced output mode to access the recording track choices. OBS supports up to six recording audio tracks and recommends a container that supports them, such as MKV. See its advanced recording guide. If your editing software needs MP4, OBS provides File → Remux Recordings; check the imported tracks afterward. Remuxing changes the container, not the original source assignments. The standard recording guide covers that operation.

Check the file in your editor

Make a short local recording that includes typing, speech and a moment of silence. In the editor, inspect all imported audio tracks:

  • Solo the keyboard track. It should contain the captured keyboard app, without the microphone source.
  • Solo the microphone track. Physical key noise picked up by the microphone can still be present.
  • Play the mixed track to check the version intended for ordinary playback.

While editing with isolated tracks, mute the mixed copy to avoid playing the same audio twice. Before export, decide which combination should reach the final video.

Hearing only speech in a video player does not prove the keyboard track was never recorded. In a January 2026 OBS support discussion, the author reported multiple tracks in the file but an apparent missing recording, then confirmed that the editor timeline was the problem. Inspect track import and selection before changing a working capture source.

A recording track is not automatically a live feed

The recording plan above does not give viewers three selectable audio feeds. Check the separate streaming output selection and which sources enter its selected track. If you want keyboard sounds in your local recording but absent from the live mix, give recording and streaming their own assignments instead of assuming the isolated recording track controls both.

Twitch also has a separate VOD track feature. Its live feed, stored VOD feed and local editing tracks serve different purposes; follow the official Twitch VOD guide if that is your requirement.

What Klakk controls

Klakk plays its 14 included sound packs through its selected output device. It does not create OBS tracks or export separate microphone and keyboard stems. Its app volume affects the sound being captured; OBS source and track settings control what reaches the recording.

The website Windows edition is 1.4.1, with a three-day trial starting at first launch. Continued use is US$4.49 once, plus applicable tax. Windows, website Mac and Mac App Store licenses are separate. Input events are processed locally for playback; usage and licensing communication still occurs. See the Windows product page and Windows privacy policy.

Use the Windows setup guide to get the app playing first, or preview the packs in your browser. A browser preview checks the sound’s character; it does not confirm your installed app’s OBS capture or track assignments.
