Illustrated keyboard switches for a playback and shortcut guide
Quick answer

Turn Klakk off from its menu or record a toggle shortcut on Mac and Windows. Understand manual pause, Background Mode and automatic application rules.

To pause Klakk’s added keyboard sounds while keeping music or meeting audio, turn Enable Klakk off. You can also record your own toggle shortcut in Settings → General. Muting the computer’s output changes everything you hear; Klakk’s enable control changes its keyboard playback.

I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. This guide was prepared with AI assistance and checked against the website editions’ current controls on October 11, 2026. It covers Mac 1.4.1/build 23 and Windows 1.4.1. The steps describe supported controls; they are not a test of every editor, keyboard layout or managed computer.

Pause from the menu or settings

On Mac, open Klakk’s menu-bar menu and turn Enable Klakk off. Turn it back on when you want keyboard playback again. If you are still setting up the app, use the Mac first-sound guide to find its menu and grant Input Monitoring.

On Windows, open Settings → General and turn Enable Klakk off. The notification-area menu also has a checked Klakk item that toggles the same enable state. Its icon may be in the hidden-icons menu. The Windows setup guide explains the tray and sound controls.

These controls pause added playback while the application remains available. Quit Klakk ends the current application session. Launch at Login controls future startup and has a separate login-startup guide.

Pausing software playback does not silence the physical keys or a keyboard beep produced by another app. It also does not pause or restart the website edition’s three-day trial.

Record a toggle shortcut

In either website edition:

  1. Open Klakk’s Settings → General.
  2. Find Enable Klakk Hotkey and click Record Hotkey, or click the displayed combination to record a replacement.
  3. When the control shows Press keys…, press the combination you want to use.
  4. Check that your combination is displayed. Test it in an ordinary document: press it once, type a short harmless sentence, then press it again and type again.
  5. Check the menu or settings enable state if you are unsure whether playback is on.

Choose a combination that your editor and operating system do not already need. Klakk’s shortcut is a toggle: the same combination turns playback off or on according to its current state. It is not a dedicated “always mute” command.

On Mac, shortcut detection needs the app’s Input Monitoring permission. Follow the permission guide if the recorded shortcut or ordinary typing is not detected. Do not assume that a shortcut printed for a different keyboard-sound app, or an older Klakk default, is your current recorded combination.

If another local tool must set playback state or choose a pack, compare menu controls, command interfaces and headless playback. A recorded toggle and a documented command interface serve different control requirements.

Manual pause, background volume and app rules

ControlWhat it does
Enable Klakk or its recorded shortcutManually toggles Klakk’s playback
Background ModeReduces Klakk’s volume while designated applications are running
An application ruleChanges sound behavior according to the application a rule targets

Klakk’s Background Mode, in Settings → Audio, applies a 5% volume multiplier when it detects one of its designated meeting, music or media applications running. This is a playback-level adjustment, not a 5% slider setting or a complete mute. An application can trigger it while open in the background; the control does not mean “mute only when this app is the frontmost window.”

The website editions do not provide a user-editable per-app exclusion list. If you need dependable silence during a particular task, use Enable Klakk or your recorded toggle. Do not treat Background Mode as proof that every meeting app, browser call or game will be recognized. Check your actual setup before recording or sharing audio.

For foreground-app automation, Keyboard Sounds Pro’s official documentation describes application rules that can limit sounds to an editor or disable them in selected games. That is a different feature from Klakk’s designated running-app volume adjustment. Our Windows app comparison gives the current distribution and profile details. We have not performed a cross-app rules test on every game or computer.

In Keyboard Sounds Pro desktop 0.3.2, an editor-only setup starts with the Global Default keyboard profile set to None, then an enabled editor rule with an audible keyboard profile; review any other existing rules. To silence one chosen app instead, leave its rule enabled and select None for its Keyboard Profile. Turning the rule off falls back to Global Default, so it can restore keyboard sound if the global profile is audible; Mouse Profile is a separate setting. Check the app’s executable path through Installed Apps or Browse rather than relying only on Last Active application: a user reported on June 5, 2026 that Alt-Tab left that display showing Explorer when setting up full-screen-app exceptions. Broader full-screen compatibility and a shipped fix were not verified.

If you are choosing an app because it must pause automatically, compare the headphone, application and call-state purchase conditions. A remembered audio output, an application rule and a microphone-use trigger are different features.

Before a call or recording

Pause Klakk, then check the microphone and computer-audio sharing controls in the meeting or recording app. Headphones determine where you hear playback; they do not prove that a recording excludes it. A recording can capture application audio directly as well as room sound through a microphone.

Use the Zoom and Teams checklist for calls and the OBS recording guide for capture sources. Lowering Klakk’s volume alone does not verify what another participant or a recording receives.

If the shortcut does not do what you expect

Start with the enable control in the app. If that works, re-record the shortcut and compare its displayed combination with the keys you pressed. Try it in an ordinary local document before testing the app where the problem occurs. Check whether another program uses the same combination. A shortcut collision is a reason to choose another combination, not to disable your system’s security controls.

If you still need help, send support your operating-system version, Klakk platform and version, the displayed shortcut, the application where it fails, and whether the menu toggle works. Do not include a licence key or private text.

Klakk’s website editions include 14 sound packs, with a three-day trial from first launch. Continuing after the trial costs US$4.49 once per platform, plus applicable tax; Mac, Windows and App Store licences are separate. Preview the packs before choosing a website download.

Keyboard input events and codes are processed locally. The website editions do not upload typed text or raw keystrokes, while usage/settings and licensing communication still occurs. See the privacy policy.
