If you want letter keys to make sounds while Shift, Command or media keys stay quiet, look for individual-key controls or a selected-key configuration. A master volume slider and an on/off shortcut cannot make that choice for you. Klakk’s current website editions have no user-facing per-key mute control; choose another approach if that is essential.

I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. I prepared this comparison with AI assistance and checked the linked official product information on October 12, 2026. The competing features below are documented options, rather than our tests of every shortcut, keyboard or application.

Decide what you want to keep quiet

The phrase “mute shortcuts” can mean several things. In a public KeyClicker discussion, a user wanted to exclude a modifier key’s own sound, or perhaps any press combined with modifiers. Those are different requirements.

A June 11, 2025 FunKey review also asked for control over the sounds from Shift, Option, Control, Command and Fn. That is one historical competitor review, rather than evidence of a current Klakk fault or the size of this audience.

Your requirementControl to look for
Quiet Shift itself, but hear a capital letterA rule for the Shift key’s own sound
Quiet the whole Command+C or Ctrl+C combinationA rule that suppresses other keys while modifiers are held
Hear only a chosen set of keysPer-key assignments with other playback defaults disabled
Stop all added typing audio for a whileA master enable switch or pause shortcut

For example, silencing Control’s own click need not silence C when you use Ctrl+C. A sound app may still treat C as a separately audible key. Do not assume that a setting named “modifier keys” suppresses every shortcut combination.

You also want to mute the added audio, rather than disable the key’s normal action. Your copy, paste, undo and navigation commands should remain available. Check the exact combination you use before paying for a sound feature.

If you want a key to remain audible at a lower level, compare individual sound gain and sample assignment with key muting. Those controls can preserve a sound you would rather keep, instead of silencing it.

For choosing clips rather than ordinary typing feedback, compare keyboard sounds and voice-chat soundboards. The destination and whether a hotkey still reaches the foreground app are separate buying conditions.

Mac: check KeyClicker’s key-level controls

KeyClicker’s official changelog documents individual sound assignment, an unassign-key-sound button, a zero-volume option and changes to key enable/disable controls. These make it a candidate when choosing particular keys matters more than selecting one prepared keyboard pack.

Its current US App Store listing shows a free download, an All Access Lifetime US$1.99 in-app purchase and macOS 14 or later. The listing does not establish which current controls are available before that purchase. Open the actual settings and check the feature you need; a free download is not proof that every feature is free.

A per-key rule is still different from a rule for an entire modifier combination. The historic developer reply says that specified keys can be quiet. It does not establish that every key pressed while Command, Control, Option or Fn is held will be quiet. We have not tested that broader behavior.

Windows: consider a selected-key setup in KeyTone

KeyTone offers free downloads and configurable sound bindings. It is suited to building a sound configuration rather than simply choosing a complete included pack. Its project does not provide a library of recorded audio sources; use recordings you have the right to use.

The published 1.0.2 interface separates Global SFX Settings, Per-Key SFX Settings and Use Built-in Test Sounds. Its documented priority places per-key settings above global sounds, with built-in test sounds as a fallback. To make only chosen keys audible, inspect all three layers. Removing one key’s assignment can expose a global or test sound instead of producing silence. Release interface definitions

The same release’s published playback code follows that fallback order. A chosen-key configuration therefore needs the unwanted global and test playback disabled as well as the intended keys assigned. This describes the published configuration mechanism; we have not run that setup or verified every special key in the released binary.

The 1.0.2 release has Windows x64 and ARM64 downloads. Although Mac and Linux packages are also listed, the developer limits that release’s usability and feature-completeness assurance to Windows. Do not treat the presence of another platform’s package as equivalent support.

KeyTone’s configuration can be worthwhile if choosing individual keys is your main requirement. Account for the time needed to prepare sounds and verify assignments, rather than comparing only the download price.

What Klakk lets you choose

Klakk’s website Mac 1.4.1/build 23 and Windows 1.4.1 editions offer 14 included mechanical sound packs, pack selection, volume, audio output and manual enable/disable controls. They have no supported interface for choosing a silent list of keys, suppressing all modifier combinations or importing a custom key map.

A prepared pack can assign different recordings or segments to different keys. That is not a per-key mute editor. Likewise, the Windows first-press behavior for held keys controls repeated playback; it does not let you create an exclusion list.

Use the interactive sound preview if you want to choose an included mechanical sound without building a custom configuration. If selected-key silence is a must-have, the preview cannot substitute for that missing control.

For occasional quiet, the pause guide explains Klakk’s menu controls and toggle shortcut. Pausing stops the added typing audio as a whole. Mac Background Mode adjusts the background playback level when specified apps are running; it does not filter individual keys or recognize every shortcut combination as a quiet interval.

Check your requirement during a trial or free download

Before installing, write a small sound requirement: “letters audible; Shift itself quiet; copy and paste quiet” is more useful than “less noise.” The third part needs more than silencing Shift.

During your own evaluation, compare an ordinary letter, the modifier by itself, a capital letter, copy/paste and one media key you use. For an app with press and release sounds, listen to both parts. Repeat the comparison after changing its control, without running a second sound app at the same time.

These are checks for your setup. A successful test of one combination does not prove every key, remapping tool or application is covered. Fn and media keys can be reported differently from ordinary letters, and some programs handle shortcuts separately from text entry.

If all added clicks are acceptable and you prefer included sounds, download Klakk and use its three-day trial from first launch. Mac supports macOS 14+ on Apple silicon and Intel; Windows supports Windows 10/11 with native x64 and ARM64 builds, and its installer is unsigned. Continued use costs US$4.49 once per platform, plus applicable tax. Website Mac, Windows and App Store licenses are separate.

Klakk processes input events and key codes locally without uploading typed text or raw keystrokes. Usage analytics and licensing communication still occurs; the Mac edition also has settings analytics. Read the Mac privacy policy or Windows privacy policy for your edition. A quiet-key preference should not require sharing private text with a developer.

Frequently asked questions

Can Klakk mute only Shift, Command or Control?

The current website editions have no user-facing individual-key mute control. You can pause all added typing audio or change its volume, but cannot create a list of silent keys.

Does muting a modifier silence the entire shortcut?

Not necessarily. The letter pressed with that modifier can trigger a separate sound. Check whether the chosen app controls individual keys or suppresses every press combined with a modifier.

Does removing a sound assignment always make a key quiet?

No. Some apps fall back to global or built-in test sounds. Check the fallback settings as well as the individual assignment.

Will sound settings disable normal keyboard shortcuts?

Your requirement should concern added audio while keeping the shortcut available. Verify the normal action and the sound behavior separately in the app and key combinations you use.
