Quick answer

Check Activity Monitor's Preventing Sleep column, compare pausing sounds with quitting the app, and separate idle sleep from display and wake settings.

If your Mac stays awake while a keyboard sound app is running, check Activity Monitor → Energy → Preventing Sleep, then compare the same idle conditions after quitting the app normally. Silence, a closed settings window or a low CPU reading does not tell you whether the app has stopped or whether it is keeping the Mac awake.

I’m Levin, the developer of Klakk. I prepared this guide with AI assistance, checking Apple’s documentation and the normal Quit control in website Mac Klakk 1.4.1 / build 23 on October 11, 2026. We have not measured sleep behavior or battery consumption for this guide. These checks do not establish that Klakk has a sleep problem or guarantee that quitting an app fixes one.

Identify which sleep behavior you mean

Start with the symptom. A display that stays lit, a Mac that does not enter idle sleep and a Mac that wakes again are different observations.

What you noticeWhat to check first
The display stays onDisplay-off settings and activity in the apps you are using
The display turns off but the Mac stays awakeAutomatic sleep settings and the app’s Preventing Sleep status
The Mac sleeps, then wakes againInput devices, connected devices and network wake conditions
Keyboard sounds stop after wakingPlayback, permissions and audio output in the sound app

This guide focuses on a Mac that does not sleep while idle. Apple’s sleep troubleshooting guide explains that display-off settings, power-adapter sleep settings, sharing, disk activity and connected devices can affect the result. Record whether you are on battery or plugged in before comparing two observations.

If the only problem is silent keyboard audio after waking, use the first-sound checklist. If the app returns when you sign in, check Launch at Login.

Read the sleep flag separately from energy use

Apple’s Activity Monitor energy guide describes several distinct fields:

FieldWhat it tells you
Preventing SleepWhether the app is preventing the Mac from sleeping
Energy ImpactA relative indication of its current energy use
12 hr PowerAverage energy impact over the last 12 hours, or since startup; shown on Mac laptops
App NapWhether App Nap is active for that app

A low CPU or Energy Impact reading is not a substitute for checking Preventing Sleep. Energy Impact is not a watt reading, remaining battery time or a fixed score that lets you rank keyboard sound apps.

Record the app’s current status

  1. Open Activity Monitor from Applications → Utilities, then select Energy.
  2. Find the keyboard sound app by its actual name. Klakk and Klack are separate products; check which one you installed.
  3. If a column is hidden, choose View → Columns and show the field you need. Apple’s process-viewing guide also explains the search field and process filters.
  4. Note the app’s Preventing Sleep status when you are using it and again after you stop typing and the display updates. Record other active audio, call or recording apps and your power connection.

This is an observation. An app appearing in the list does not identify the cause of the sleep problem. An intermittent problem also cannot be excluded by one reading.

Compare pausing sounds with quitting the app

In website Mac Klakk 1.4.1, General → Enable Klakk controls playback. Quit Klakk in its menu-bar menu ends the app session. Closing its settings window or turning the volume down leaves the app running. The pause and hotkey guide explains these playback controls.

For a useful comparison:

  1. Save your work and note the current power connection, output device, sleep settings and other open apps.
  2. Pause playback and observe whether the app’s status and the idle-sleep symptom change.
  3. Quit the sound app normally. For Klakk, use Quit Klakk in the menu-bar menu.
  4. To check whether its process is still running, switch Activity Monitor to CPU, choose View → All Processes, search for its name and let the list update. Energy history can retain earlier information; a historical row alone does not prove an app is still running.
  5. Compare idle sleep under the same conditions and waiting period. Stop using the keyboard and mouse during that observation; repeatedly checking Activity Monitor is activity of its own.

Keep a manual sleep check separate: Apple’s instructions use Apple menu → Sleep. Successfully putting the Mac to sleep once does not prove that its usual idle-sleep behavior is fixed.

What the result can tell you

If the symptom changes after a normal quit, you have information worth sharing with that app’s developer. It suggests a relationship under those conditions; it does not identify a particular code path or prove that every version has the same problem.

If it does not change, return to Apple’s sleep troubleshooting guide and check the other conditions you recorded. Avoid treating the sound app as the only possible cause or quitting unfamiliar system processes together.

For a Klakk support request, include:

  • Your macOS and app versions, and whether you use the website or App Store edition.
  • Battery or power-adapter use, the selected audio output and other active audio apps.
  • Whether the problem affects idle sleep, manual sleep or waking again.
  • The Preventing Sleep status and symptom with playback enabled, paused and after a normal quit.

You do not need to send typed text, passwords or a license key. If you share an Activity Monitor screenshot, remove unrelated app names or account information that the developer does not need.

Include your normal setup when trying an app

Website Mac Klakk 1.4.1 / build 23 supports macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon and Intel Macs. Its 14 sound packs can be tried for three days from first launch. Use your ordinary output device and routine when deciding whether it suits you; the trial is not a battery or sleep-performance guarantee.

Continued website Mac use costs US$4.49 once, plus applicable taxes at Creem checkout. The website Mac, Windows and App Store licenses are separate. Website Mac Klakk handles input events and physical key codes locally; it does not upload typed text or raw key events, but usage, settings and license checks involve communication.
