Add a sound to your own typing
Klakk adds keyboard sounds while you write on macOS 14 or later. Choose from 14 sound packs and use the 3-day trial to listen while drafting and editing in your usual apps. The website Mac edition starts its trial on first launch.
The installed app responds to keyboard events across Mac apps. It does not require a Google Docs or Notion extension. Check your own browser and editor during the trial; this guide is not a compatibility test of every app version.
This guide comes from the Klakk team. Added typing sound is a personal preference. We have not established that Klakk increases writing speed, concentration or output.
If you want numbers as well as sound, compare keyboard audio, background counts and scored typing practice. A document word count, a key counter and a WPM or accuracy result answer different questions.

Set up your first writing session
The browser preview lets you compare sounds on that page. To hear sounds in your editor, install the Mac app and check the following:
- Open Klakk from Applications and enable playback.
- Enable Klakk in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring. Restart Klakk if macOS asks.
- Select a sound pack and set an audible volume in Klakk.
- Check the output device in Klakk’s audio settings. If you select System Default, also check System Settings > Sound > Output.
- Type a short sentence in a normal document, then try Return, Backspace and your usual editing shortcuts.
Apple explains how to control Input Monitoring and choose the Mac’s sound output. These are separate controls: permission lets an app receive input events, while output settings determine where its audio plays.
If nothing plays, confirm that Klakk is enabled, the trial or license permits playback, and both app and output volumes are audible. Use the first-sound troubleshooting guide if you still need help.
Check drafting and editing separately
Use a short piece of your own writing. Keep the output device and volume the same while comparing packs, so you can tell what changed.
| Writing task | Listen and check |
|---|---|
| Draft a paragraph | Do you enjoy the sound while typing full sentences? |
| Revise that paragraph | Do Return, Backspace and modifier keys sound comfortable alongside letter keys? |
| Use your regular shortcuts | Do copy, paste, undo and navigation still behave as expected in your editor? |
| Continue with playback disabled | Do you prefer the added sound enough to keep using it? |
Try Google Docs, Notion, Apple Notes or whichever editor you normally use. Those are suggested test locations, not partner integrations or a claim that their developers endorse Klakk.
If you want a typewriter experience, compare a separate sound utility with an editor that has built-in audio. Choose whether to keep your current document workflow before buying another writing app.
A pack you enjoy for a brief preview may become distracting during editing. Lower the volume, change the pack or disable playback as your preference changes. The checklist helps you choose a setup; it does not measure productivity or audio latency.
Keep the added sound in your chosen output
For shared rooms, select headphones and listen at a comfortable volume. Speakers play the app’s added sound into the room. Klakk leaves the physical noise, key travel and tactile feel of your keyboard unchanged.
When taking a call, disable added playback if you do not want it. A microphone may pick up room sound, and sharing computer audio may include application sound. Headphones do not guarantee that another participant hears nothing from your entire setup.
If wireless playback feels delayed, compare the same sentence and pack through built-in speakers or wired headphones. This is a listening check on your equipment, not a millisecond benchmark.
Understand permission and privacy
Input Monitoring allows Klakk to respond to keyboard events while another app has focus. Klakk does not record or upload the text you type. Usage statistics and license information are processed separately, as described in the privacy policy.
You can turn off playback in Klakk or revoke Input Monitoring in macOS settings. Review the permission before enabling it, and choose the setup you are comfortable using.
Choose a Mac edition before purchasing
The download page has a website Mac edition and a Mac App Store edition. The website edition costs US$4.49 once, with applicable taxes shown at Creem checkout. The App Store edition uses the price in Apple’s purchase screen.
The two Mac editions have separate licenses. A Windows license is also a separate purchase. Follow the purchase action in the edition you installed; downloading it does not purchase a license.
Use the trial to check the sound in your actual writing routine. Download Klakk for Mac or preview the sound packs before choosing.
