Quick answer

Diagnose muffled or quieter keyboard sounds on Mac when a Bluetooth headset microphone opens. Separate audio quality, output routing, background volume and delay.

If keyboard sounds become muffled or quieter when a call starts, check which microphone the call is using. Apple documents that using a Bluetooth headset’s microphone can reduce its playback quality and volume. In Klakk, also check Background Mode: a designated running app can lower keyboard playback separately.

I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. This guide was prepared with AI assistance and checked against Apple’s instructions and the website Mac edition’s current controls on October 11, 2026. It covers Klakk 1.4.1/build 23. The listening checks below are suggestions for your equipment; we have not tested every headset or published a total-latency benchmark.

Identify what changed

Use an ordinary document and a short harmless sentence. Keep the same Klakk pack and avoid raising the volume to compensate before you understand the change.

What you noticeFirst check
Keyboard sounds and music both become muffled when the microphone opensThe headset’s microphone and playback mode
Only Klakk becomes quieter while a meeting or music app is runningKlakk Volume and Background Mode
Sound arrives after the keypress but keeps the same toneThe audio path; compare a wired output
Klakk is silent, including before a callEnable Klakk, permissions, pack and Output Device

These are starting points, not diagnoses from sound alone. Compare one setting at a time and note which other audio changes with it.

Why opening a Bluetooth microphone can change playback

Apple’s Bluetooth headphone support article describes a higher-quality listening mode and a second mode used for listening while speaking through the headset microphone. In the second mode, playback quality can decrease until the microphone is no longer being used. Volume changes, static or popping can accompany it.

This is different from choosing a keyboard-sound pack. Changing a pack does not establish which Bluetooth mode is active, and a native keyboard-sound app does not guarantee that every audio connection has the same quality or timing.

Compare microphone input and sound output

Do the comparison outside an important call so you can restore your preferred setup.

  1. End or close applications using the headset microphone. Apple also advises closing the Sound settings panel when checking reduced Bluetooth quality.
  2. Listen to the same short audio sample and type the same sentence again. Note whether both music and keyboard sounds change when microphone use ends.
  3. If you want to compare a different microphone, open System Settings → Sound → Input and select an available built-in or external microphone. Apple explains the input-device control.
  4. Check the meeting app’s own microphone selector as well. A program may use its own selected device rather than the system choice.
  5. Close the settings panel and test again. Keep the headset as the listening output if that is the comparison you intend to make.

Switching input devices changes what records your voice. It is not a guaranteed fix for every headset, app or connection. Check that the other participant can still hear you before using the setup for a real call.

If quality remains reduced, Apple suggests selecting the Mac’s internal speakers and then reselecting the Bluetooth headphones from Control Center → Sound. Keep the volume comfortable and account for nearby people before switching to speakers.

Check Klakk’s separate controls

Open Klakk Settings → Audio:

  • Volume controls the app’s playback level.
  • Output Device can follow System Default or use a named connected output. A named choice and the system output are separate settings; check both when comparing devices.
  • Background Mode applies a 5% playback-volume multiplier while a designated meeting, music or media application is running. It can act even when that app is not the frontmost window. This is a volume change, not a change to the headset’s codec or microphone.

For the comparison, note Background Mode’s state and keep it consistent. If only Klakk changes while other audio remains the same, this control is worth checking before blaming the connection. The Mac first-sound guide covers the remaining app and permission checks.

If you want to stop keyboard playback during a call, turn Enable Klakk off. The pause and shortcut guide explains that control.

Quality, delay and call capture are separate checks

To investigate perceived delay, compare the same sentence and pack with built-in speakers or a wired output. Keep the output change explicit in Klakk if it is pinned to a named device. A preference between two setups does not measure milliseconds or prove which component caused every delay.

Headphones also do not prove that keyboard sounds are excluded from a meeting or recording. Computer-audio sharing can capture application playback directly. Follow the call-audio checklist to check what is transmitted.

Klakk’s website Mac edition requires macOS 14 or later, on Apple silicon or Intel. It includes 14 packs and a three-day trial from first launch. Continuing after the trial costs US$4.49 once, plus applicable tax, with a separate licence from Windows and the Mac App Store. Preview the sound styles and use the Mac trial checklist to evaluate your own setup.

If the problem remains, send support the Mac model without its serial number, macOS version, Klakk edition/version, headset model, selected input and output devices, Background Mode state, and whether music changes too. Typed text and licence keys are unnecessary. Klakk processes keyboard events and codes locally; usage/settings and licensing communication still occurs, as explained in the privacy policy.
