Choose a custom-text trainer when you want to retype an existing passage and compare your input with it. Keep your editor and add a sound utility when you want to write something new with audio you enjoy. Before paying for book practice, check the accepted file format, how you resume a long text and where your practice copy is stored. Klakk supplies fourteen mechanical sound packs; it does not import books or grade a practice passage.
I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. I prepared this buying comparison with AI assistance and checked the linked official information on October 13–14, 2026. We read the published features and relevant public source without uploading a book, running a training session or measuring learning results.
Buy the missing part of the experience
In a public discussion about typing out books, a reader wanted to upload their own TXT or PDF file. A separate request for practising with personal books sought a web or Mac alternative to a Windows program. Those requests identify a practical distinction: liking a trainer’s sounds or public reading list does not establish that it accepts the material you want.
| What you want | Purchase condition to check |
|---|---|
| Practise a passage you already have | Custom text or the exact file format you use |
| Continue through a long book | Saved position and how you resume it |
| Use the same material on another device | The documented account and storage arrangement |
| Compose a new draft with pleasant clicks | Your editor’s document tools plus the audio you prefer |
A trainer supplies expected text. Your input can be compared against that prompt. An editor holds a draft you are creating or changing. Adding a keyboard click does not turn that draft into a scored exercise, and a practice result does not replace the original document.
Try a local TXT route before buying cloud uploads
Monkeytype is worth examining when plain text is enough. Its published custom-text interface accepts TXT files and reads them as UTF-8 text. That inspected file-open control does not establish an EPUB or PDF importer.
Its save interface also exposes a long-text book mode for saving progress and continuing later. The published custom-text storage uses browser local storage for named texts and long-text progress. This gives you a local-storage route to evaluate, rather than evidence that your imported book automatically follows you through an account.
Keep the original file separately. Browser storage should not be your only copy of a book or manuscript. We inspected this source snapshot, without confirming every deployed browser build, file size, input method or resume operation.
If TXT is suitable, evaluate that route before paying specifically for a private book library. If EPUB import or access from another device is essential, inspect the service offering those features directly. Changing a file’s extension does not establish that the importer can read its contents.
A subscription can buy your own material, while sounds stay free
Typersguild’s FAQ separates public-book practice from Premium private EPUB and plain-text uploads. It allows up to fifty private books for practice and describes them as accessible only to the account holder. Public browsing is available without an account; saving progress and Premium features involve an account.
The current pricing page lists typing sounds in the free plan. Premium adds uploads, cloud storage and sync, alongside other features. It advertises US$4.99 per month or US$47.99 per year, with a thirty-day trial for new members, followed by the selected plan. We have not checked card requirements or started that trial.
That makes the buying question specific. You may already have the optional audio on the free tier. The subscription may be worthwhile because it accepts your book and provides the storage arrangement you want. Paying just to hear a click would overlook what the free offer already includes.
Confirm refund terms before subscribing: the pricing page advertises a thirty-day money-back guarantee, while the terms dated July 22, 2026 specify a request within fourteen days of the initial purchase. We could not resolve that difference. Ask the provider which condition applies to your purchase rather than assuming the longer period.
Those terms retain your copyright in uploaded material and limit the service to active practice, rather than backup or general file hosting. Its privacy policy says it collects typing speed, accuracy and the content you type. Account-only visibility and the service’s data collection are separate conditions to review. Use material you have permission to upload and keep the original outside the trainer.
PDF appeared in the reader’s request. The current upload descriptions we checked specify EPUB and TXT. Confirm a supported PDF route if that format is essential; the historical wish and maker reply do not establish its current availability.
File import is a feature to compare across trainers
TypeLit’s About page lists a $5 monthly subscription for features including file import and custom text. That is another offer to evaluate if you already enjoy typing from its books. The short description alone does not settle the formats, storage limits or audio entitlement for every edition.
Use your real requirements to narrow the choice: a short passage, a whole book, a saved place or material available on another device. Try a non-sensitive sample you are allowed to use before moving a long manuscript into a service. Confirm whether a result and its place in the text actually persist in the context you intend to use.
For scores, also compare the counting and practice rules. A daily key total, a WPM result and correctness against your chosen passage measure different things. The ability to choose a favourite book does not establish improved speed or accuracy.
Keep everyday writing in the editor you chose
If you want to draft a new chapter, email or note, there may be no reason to import a reference book at all. Your existing editor can continue handling editing, saving and export. Our editor-or-sound-app comparison covers that choice.
For the optional mechanical audio, hear Klakk’s fourteen included packs before installing. The browser preview responds on its own page. It neither loads your book into a trainer nor adds audio to another tab or starts the installed trial.
Website Mac 1.4.1/build 23 supports macOS 14+ on Apple silicon and Intel. Website Windows 1.4.1 supports Windows 10/11 on native x64 and ARM64. Each edition offers every included pack for three days from first launch; continued use costs US$4.49 once per platform, plus applicable tax. Website Mac, Windows and App Store licenses are separate.
Klakk’s purchase covers its audio layer. It has no user-facing book uploader, expected-text grader or practice-progress library. It processes playback key events and codes locally without uploading typed text or raw keystrokes. Usage analytics and licensing communication occur; Mac also has settings telemetry and requires Input Monitoring. Read the Mac or Windows policy for your edition. The Windows installer is unsigned; check the download-verification guidance before running a file whose source or warning is unclear.
For retyping your own book, compare import and progress features first. For sound in your usual writing environment, preview the actual packs and choose the Mac website trial or Windows trial. If a trainer already plays optional audio, check whether you can quiet it before evaluating an additional sound layer. We have not tested every pairing, and make no claim that added clicks improve learning.
Frequently asked questions
Can Klakk import a book for typing practice?
The current website editions supply fourteen mechanical sound packs. They do not provide a book uploader, expected-text grader or practice-progress library.
Does TXT import also mean EPUB and PDF are supported?
Each format needs documented support. The inspected Monkeytype control accepts TXT; Typersguild’s current private-upload descriptions specify EPUB and TXT. A PDF request does not prove that a current importer supports it.
Must I subscribe to Typersguild just for typing sounds?
Its current free plan includes typing sounds. Premium adds private uploads and cloud features. Evaluate the feature you need and confirm the current trial, billing and refund conditions before paying.
Is an imported practice book a backup of my original?
Keep the original separately. Local practice storage and a service’s private book library have their own limits. Typersguild’s terms specifically describe uploads as practice material rather than backup or general storage.
