Quick answer

Compare musical typing samples, a song that advances with each key, and a virtual instrument. Check Windows and Mac options before paying for keyboard audio.

Download Klakk

For macOS and Windows. Try all 14 sound packs free for 3 days.

Decide how much control you want over the music. A typing-sound app can play an instrument-like sample as you write. A song mode can advance a prepared tune with each press. A virtual instrument lets you choose notes and, in a recording app, keep an editable performance. Buying one of these does not automatically give you the other two.

I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. I used AI to help prepare this comparison and checked the linked public sources on October 12, 2026. Klakk offers mechanical keyboard sounds; it has no dedicated piano pack, song mode or MIDI output. We have not installed or jointly tested the competing products described here.

Choose the experience first

What you wantFeature to check before buying
Musical taps while writing in your usual appsA desktop sound utility with the musical recordings you like
A recognizable tune that progresses as you typeA documented song-sequence mode
Choose pitches, play chords or change instrumentsA virtual instrument and an input method for musical notes
Record a phrase and later change individual notesA music app that records editable note data
Mechanical clicks that follow your typingA keyboard-sound utility such as Klakk

The distinction matters even when everything uses the same computer keyboard. In a June 2025 Native Instruments community question, someone had bought an instrument library and wanted a few notes without learning a complicated recording environment. A separate 2021 software discussion includes a request for random piano sounds while typing. These are individual, historical requests with different goals. They do not establish how many people want either feature today.

A useful question before paying is: Do you want sound accompanying a sentence, or do you want to perform and edit a piece of music?

Musical samples can accompany ordinary typing

On Windows, Keystroke Sounds advertises downloadable Marimba, Harp, Music Box, Kalimba and Vibraphone packs, alongside its other themes. It lists Windows 10/11 and describes playback across apps from the system tray. Its pack library is presented as free to try; the app itself has a separate, one-time license purchase.

That supplies an instrument-like listening choice. The page does not establish a MIDI recording workflow or a particular note mapping for each musical pack. We did not obtain a current license price or an exact trial duration from that page, so check those terms before purchasing.

A sample can sound like a piano without giving you the controls of a piano instrument. Ask whether a letter always plays one particular recording, whether the app chooses recordings randomly, and whether it follows a sequence. The fixed-versus-random guide explains those playback controls separately.

If you already have recordings you want to use, compare custom import and mapping support. Importing a piano recording does not automatically add octave controls, chords, a music score or editable note recording. Keep the rights to the recordings separate from the app’s ability to load them.

A song mode can choose the next note for you

TapNoise’s Song mode documentation, updated October 9, describes a sequence: choose Piano, Kalimba or 8-bit, select a tune, and each press advances to its next note. A five-second pause restarts the song. The documentation says this mode unlocks with a license.

You provide the timing of the presses; the selected tune supplies the note order. That can suit someone who wants a melody to accompany writing without choosing each pitch. It does not establish a facility for composing a new tune or exporting its notes as MIDI.

The current download page lists macOS 14 or later, on Intel and Apple silicon. The published normal prices are US$9.99 for one Mac and US$14.99 for two, plus tax; launch discounts have their own availability conditions. Check the actual offer rather than assuming a displayed discount is still available.

Its trial descriptions currently disagree. The website describes license-gated audio, while a Product Hunt maker update announces three free days without a key or card. We have not established which trial behavior the downloadable build provides. Confirm that before relying on a free installed-app evaluation. Its web sound demo is a separate way to hear recordings.

Notes while another app is in front

If you want each letter to play your chosen note while you keep writing in another app, check for background keyboard input. Having a piano-style sound or a musical typing window does not establish that the software reacts when another program has focus.

A 2021 software request asked for musical notes throughout desktop typing, beyond a particular website or browser extension. The reader accepted a suggestion to use Soundplant. That historical exchange identifies a feature to evaluate; it is not our playback test or proof of today’s compatibility.

The current Soundplant 59.5 manual describes assigning your own sound files to keys and enabling background key input while another window is in front. It is a sampler, rather than a synthesizer that generates any note for you. Bring recordings you have permission to use; choosing a note sample and choosing a preset typing theme are different amounts of setup.

Background key input is a paid feature, covered by the documented 25-launch trial. That is a count of launches, not a 25-day evaluation. The free edition is for non-commercial use; the purchase page also requires a license for commercial use. Its single-user registration covers Windows and Mac, and the current terms include two years of upgrades for the version license.

The January 15, 2026 version 59 announcement lists a US$69 Single User License. The current purchase page says currency and tax depend on location, with tax sometimes added at checkout. We have not obtained your current checkout amount or bought a license.

The current download page lists 59.5.2 for Windows 10/11, 64-bit, and macOS 10.14 or later on Apple silicon and Intel. Mac keyboard input needs the documented Accessibility permission. The manual also describes protected-input limitations; we have not tested your editor or every system combination.

During the available evaluation, check the background-input controls as well as the sounds. An optional modifier requirement changes which presses trigger playback; a foreground-on-trigger option can bring Soundplant’s window forward. Confirm that ordinary writing remains the workflow you intend. This route can fit a custom note-per-key soundtrack, but it does not by itself supply an editable MIDI composition or prove music-learning benefits.

A virtual instrument gives you note control

If you want to choose a note, hold it, change octaves or make chords, look for an instrument input feature. A general typing soundtrack will not necessarily provide those controls.

For Windows and Mac, Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard is a free GPL-licensed MIDI controller. Its official page lists 0.9.2 Windows x64 and ARM64 packages and a Mac package. It maps computer keys to musical notes, but VMPK does not generate the audio itself: its output needs a synthesizer or compatible instrument input. This is an additional connection to plan, not a ready-made set of typing sounds. We have not verified its current minimum OS versions or operation with your chosen instrument.

That distinction also applies to an instrument library you already own. A MIDI controller, the instrument that produces audio, and a recorder can be separate parts. Check the library’s supported host and input requirements before buying another utility. A mechanical sound pack cannot load an unrelated purchased instrument merely because both respond to keys.

On Mac, GarageBand combines instruments and recording. Apple’s Musical Typing guide describes selecting a software-instrument track and opening Window → Show Musical Typing. Its keyboard layout includes notes plus controls for octave, velocity and sustain. These are controls for performing the selected instrument inside GarageBand.

Apple’s recording guide describes recording that performance into a MIDI region. You can then work with the notes in the music project, rather than only recording whatever audio happened to come through your speakers. The current US Mac App Store listing is free; version 10.4.14 requires macOS 15.6 or later. An older installation may have different requirements. This comparison does not verify compatibility with every third-party instrument library.

What Klakk’s trial can help you decide

Choose Klakk if your listening goal is mechanical typing audio from 14 included packs. If piano tones, a prepared song or MIDI composition are essential, choose an option that documents those features.

The free Klakk browser preview lets you compare those mechanical sounds on its page. It does not output MIDI or start the installed app’s trial. If you enjoy the samples, the installed website edition gives you three days from first launch to evaluate playback in your normal desktop workflow.

Website Mac 1.4.1/build 23 supports macOS 14+, on Apple silicon and Intel. Website Windows 1.4.1 supports Windows 10/11, with native x64 and ARM64 builds; its installer is unsigned. Continuing costs US$4.49 once per platform, plus applicable tax. Website Mac, Windows and App Store licenses are separate.

Klakk processes key events and codes locally without uploading typed text or raw keystrokes. Usage analytics and licensing communication occur separately; the Mac edition also has settings analytics. Review the Mac privacy policy or Windows privacy policy before granting access. A music tool may have a different permission and data model; the fact that an app plays local samples does not establish zero network communication.

Spend on the feature you actually want

Use a short sentence for an audio utility, or a short phrase of notes for an instrument. Keep the playback level comfortable and compare with the extra sound off. Notice whether you enjoy hearing musical pitches during editing, Backspace and shortcuts, as well as during uninterrupted typing.

Before purchasing a music-oriented option, check what you will retain: a sound theme, the ability to advance a tune, an editable music project, or a license for a particular instrument library. If the feature you need is absent or its trial terms are unclear, establish that requirement before paying. These are preference and purchase checks, not a productivity, music-learning or latency benchmark.

For mechanical audio, preview Klakk’s 14 packs and then choose your Mac or Windows trial. For musical notes, begin with the relevant product’s instrument controls and licensing terms.

Frequently asked questions

Does Klakk have piano sounds or a song mode?

The current website editions include 14 mechanical keyboard sound packs. They have no dedicated piano pack, song-sequence control or MIDI output. Preview the included recordings before choosing Klakk.

Does a piano typing pack let me record music as MIDI?

Playing a piano-like audio sample does not establish MIDI output or note recording. Check for those features in a virtual instrument or music app if you need to edit the notes later.

Will Song mode let me choose each pitch?

TapNoise documents a tune whose next note advances on each key press. That described mode supplies a prepared order of notes. It does not establish free choice of each pitch or a song editor.

Can I use a computer keyboard without buying a musical keyboard?

GarageBand documents Musical Typing on Mac, and VMPK maps computer keys to MIDI notes for a connected synthesizer or instrument. Their setup and software requirements differ; neither claim verifies every keyboard layout or instrument combination.
