Quick answer

Compare a recorded double click with a sound triggered when you release a key. Check Klakk's press playback, KeyTone and MechvibesDX's versioned behavior.

For a separate sound when you lift a key, choose an app and pack that trigger playback on key release. A recording with two clicks can play both after a single press. Klakk’s website Mac 1.4.1/build 23 and Windows 1.4.1 editions play their included samples on key press; they do not offer a separate release-sound setting.

I’m Levin, Klakk’s developer. I prepared this guide with AI assistance and checked the current Klakk controls and the linked official sources on October 11, 2026. The competing apps’ features come from their documentation and versioned source; we have not tested their installers, every pack or audio timing on your computer.

A second click can be part of one recording

A recording can contain a key going down and springing back up. If the app starts that entire recording when you press A, you can hear both sounds while your finger is still holding A. The second sound follows the recording’s timing.

A release-triggered setup makes a separate decision when you lift your finger. Its second sound should follow that release, even if you hold the key longer. This distinction appeared in a Mechvibes request from September 2, 2020: the user wanted separate down and up sounds because the full movement recording played before release. That historical request describes one preference; it does not measure demand today or establish that a requested feature shipped.

Sound behaviorWhat starts the second sound?
Two clicks inside one recordingThe recording continues after the press
Separate press and release recordingsThe app receives a release event
Repeated playback while heldThe app’s repeat behavior

Windows documents press, release and automatic repeat as separate input behavior in its Keyboard Input Overview. An app detecting a release can use it only to track held keys; detection alone does not prove that it plays a release sound. For the repeat distinction, see held keys and keyboard sounds.

What Klakk plays when you release a key

With playback enabled and permitted by the trial or license, ordinary mapped key presses start the selected pack’s sample in both website editions. Releasing a key clears its held state but does not start an additional release sample. There is no user-facing control to assign one sound to press and another to release.

Changing the pack changes its recordings. It does not add a separate release trigger. Klakk also has no supported custom-pack import or per-key editor; use the custom sound guide if creating your own assignments is essential.

This describes the current website editions. It does not establish identical behavior in every special key, input utility or App Store version.

KeyTone documents press and release playback

KeyTone’s 1.0.2 README describes sounds triggered at press and release, with no repeated playback from holding the key. It also describes customizable sound bindings. The project does not include audio source files, so preparing or obtaining recordings you have permission to use is part of the setup.

Read the 1.0.2 release conditions before choosing a build. The maintainer limits that release’s usability and feature-completeness guarantee to Windows. Mac or Linux assets in the same release do not establish formal support there. This is the maintainer’s documented scope, rather than our own installation test.

MechvibesDX: check the version and the timing meaning

The official MechvibesDX 0.8.3 sources disagree about multiple timing segments. Its V2 format guide describes randomly choosing a segment. Its audio engine in the same tag instead assigns exactly two segments to press and release, in that order. One segment is press-only; other array lengths receive no timing from that lookup.

That is a specific versioned source rule, not a test of every released binary or imported pack. Do not assume that adding more recordings creates random selection, or that a Classic format example applies unchanged to DX. Random samples and pitch variation are separate choices.

A July 21, 2026 DX report said hold and release variants were not working. The maintainer requested the tested app version and a minimal reproducing pack. The report did not supply enough detail to establish its cause, and this guide does not claim that 0.8.3 resolves that particular report.

Check the behavior you want before choosing

Use one sound app at a time, a moderate listening level and an ordinary document with harmless text.

  1. Select the pack and confirm that an ordinary tap makes sound. If Klakk is already silent, use its Windows setup or Mac first-sound guide.
  2. Press and hold A long enough for its initial recording to finish, then release it. Listen for a new sound at release.
  3. Repeat with a different hold duration. A release-triggered sound should follow lifting the key; two clicks within one recording keep their recorded spacing.
  4. Pause the sound app and repeat briefly to distinguish generated audio from your physical keyboard or another sound source.

These are checks for your own setup, not a latency measurement. If the result is unclear, give the app’s support channel its version, selected pack, key involved and whether the sound follows press, hold or release. Include only recordings or pack files you have permission to share; private typed text is unnecessary.

If included press sounds fit your preference

You can preview Klakk’s 14 packs before choosing a desktop edition. The website Mac version supports macOS 14+ on Apple silicon and Intel; Windows supports native x64 and ARM64 on Windows 10/11, with an unsigned installer. The website trial lasts three days from first launch. Continued use costs US$4.49 once per platform plus applicable tax. Website Mac, Windows and App Store licenses are separate.

Klakk handles input events and key codes locally without uploading typed text or raw keystrokes. Usage analytics and licensing communication still occur. The Mac edition also has settings telemetry; see the Mac privacy policy and Windows privacy policy. Choose an app with release playback if that is a requirement for your sound.
